I wonder how many African American players were selected by NFL teams during the first round of the 1949 draft? Given the present dominance of African American players in the NFL, it would be hard to imagine that a lack of athletic talent accounted for any absence or shortage of Black players available to NFL teams during the 1949 draft. In this context, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss barriers, perhaps even “institutional” barriers, which curtailed professional athletic opportunities for Black football players in 1949.
