President Harry Truman said that “The only thing new in the world is the history you do not know.” But sometimes we don’t learn from even our most proximate experiences.
I am happy to introduce a new series, History We Don’t Know.
Understanding how the recent past produced the present is the first step in anticipating the future. The first months of President Donald Trump’s second administration confirmed that the stories and analysis in At War With Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House and Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World foreshadowed current events and presidential decisions.
The series will summarize previous work, tell some new stories, and recommend ways that the United States can work with allies and partners to restore peace, prevent war, and promote prosperity.
Criticisms in History We Don’t Know are meant to be constructive. The series aims to improve strategic competence and strengthen confidence in our democratic principles, institutions, and processes. It is past time to transcend the vitriolic discourse associated with partisan politics and find ways to work together to build a better future for generations to come.
Harold Macmillan supposedly once said “History teaches us nothing save this: never invade Afghanistan”. He may have had a point.
Looking forward to this General! Big fan of your other podcasts and books!
